"Kovac had seen more dead bodies than he could count men, women, children; victims of shootings, stabbings, strangulations, beatings; fresh corpses and bodies that had been left for days in the trunks of cars in the dead of summer. But he had never seen anything quite like this...."

On a frigid New Year's Eve in Minneapolis, a young woman's brutalized body falls from the trunk of a car into the path of oncoming traffic. Questions as to whether she was alive or dead when she hit the icy pavement result in her macabre nickname, Zombie Doe. Unidentified and unidentifiable, she is the ninth nameless female victim of the year, and homicide detectives Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska are charged with the task of not only finding out who Zombie Doe is but who in her life hated her enough to destroy her. Was it personal? Or could it just have been a crime of opportunity? Their greatest fear is that not only is she their ninth Jane Doe of the year but that she may be the ninth victim of a vicious, transient serial killer they have come to call Doc Holiday. Crisscrossing America's heartland, Doc Holiday chooses his victims at random, snatching them in one city and leaving them in another, always on a holiday. If Zombie Doe is one of his victims, he has brought his gruesome game to a new and more terrifying level. But as Kovac and Liska begin to uncover the truth, they will find that the monsters in their ninth girl's life may have lived closer to home. And even as another young woman disappears, they have to ask the question Which is the greater evil - the devil you know or the devil you don't?

Wow! What a great book. A non-stop read, from start to finish. This was about two different stories wrapped up into one. There are two murders and so many suspects. Who I thought it was to begin with was not who it ended up being. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it kept you wondering. The ending was even more of a surprise. I never once thought of this being the person responsible for Penny Gray’s death.
This was a book that I found very hard to put down. I love Tami Hoag’s writing, but this was one of the best books I have read. I would give it a ten star.

The 9th Girl (Audible Audio Edition) Tami Hoag David Colacci Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Do you know where your child is? This is not a book for younger children. I would rate it PG-13. Parents should use their judgment. Teenagers might relate to parts of it. It is a frigid New Years Eve in Minneapolis. Jason Jackson is driving a stretch limousine, the Wild Thing - "a twenty passenger white Hummer with zebra upholstery. A rolling nightclub awash in purple light, it is tricked out with a state-of-the-art sound system, satellite TV, and a fully stocked bar." He is badly distracted by activities in back including naked female flesh when a car pulls onto the highway from the right, hits a large pothole, the car's trunk pops open, and a half-naked girl's body pops out and lands in the highway in front of him. He calls it a zombie. His attempt to panic stop on the icy road results in a three vehicle pileup when the car behind him rear ends the limo, and is rear ended in turn by the following car. This ruins New Years Eve for everyone involved, including Homicide investigators Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska. Thanks to the driver, the unidentified teenage girl victim is identified as Zombie Doe, and the News Media has a field day. The killing has some earmarks of eight previous victims of an unidentified serial killer dubbed Doc Holiday, but it looks sloppy compared to the previous victims.

The investigation leads into the teenage world of bullies, rebels, cliques, outsiders, and a general distrust of adults; along with some child neglect and abuse. It's hard to get straight answers from anyone. There is much more going on than meets the eye. While the victim's mutilated body languishes in the morgue, we are led through a complex case. Nikki must contend with her own rebellious teenage son while investigating the case. The plot moves between characters including the serial killer - be wary of friendly strangers. The plot finally ends in a somewhat blazing finish with some surprises.

The is a well written story with some choice quotable lines. It gets a bit gory in some parts with some vivid descriptions. The author is from Minnesota and has returned to her native state with the story.
This is a page turner. I couldn't put it down. I've read lots of Tami Hoag but this was a stunning book full of gritty work by the detectives. The nether world of teenagers made this a highly provocative book. But the surprise endings were something else. The characters were well fleshed out and I hated the people who were terrible. And loved those who were different. The cops were believable and highly motivated. A must read.
I've been a fan of Tami Hoag for quite a while and I first read a Sam Kovak/Nicki Liska novel probably five or six years ago (likely more). She develops good characters and the plots are usually enough to keep me reading, however this one just was not one of my favorites. I could be just tired of the repeating characters - sometimes I do find Kovak and Liska to a be a little bit to cliche - or this story just might not have been her best work.

I found this book to drag in places and by the end was finishing it just to finish without really caring what the outcome was or how the story wrapped up.

That being said, it's a pretty easy read and I would say it's great for a vacation type book. Something to read while relaxing but not something you have to really focus on in order to get the most out of it. I'm not swearing off Hoag by any means. I actually hope she comes out with some new books soon, as usually I find her work to be pretty good.
This is Tami Hoag at her best. Ms Hoag writes in so many genre. This one is murder, Gore, a little romance and a totally surprise ending. It is Kovac and Liska at their finest. It begins with horror with a multilateral naked teenager popping out of a car trunk in a freeway accident. It gets better from there (or goes downhill you might say) with lots of action and suspense. You won't want to miss this action-packed novel, especially as Liska deals with the dramas of 2 teenage sons. Watch in future novels to see how she handles the hurdles of teenage family life simultaneous with being a detective on the police force.
